The Pug Process
I have been working on a new novel and I use colored index cards to block out scenes. When I finish writing a scene I put a river stone over it. This is a picture of the process...with Walter in it, of course, because he is also an inextricable part of the writing process. Here he's saying "STOP WRITING AND TAKE ME FOR A WALK. Oh, and here are your shoes dummy, so be quick about it."

CABIN PUG

Walter loves the cabin. So many creatures to hunt down and eat, which freaks mama out so she hollers! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Also, we watch movies at night, and Walter thinks the TV is a window. This is him barking at Godzilla, who he does not think should be in the cabin. Notice the stuffed animals he has already conquered and strewn around. Godzilla better step off!

Sampa Sampa Sampa....
It's true, I have created a language I call "Wallymon". It's a language I speak only to Walter, unless I forget and talk Wallymon at dinner parties, at which point everyone else stops talking and looks at me. Translation is difficult, but this photo is a good illustration of a moment I would look at Walter and say, "Oh Wally. Sampa Sampa Sampa." I think it's closes English translation is: "Oh Walter, I luvs luvs luvs you and your big dinner roll head."More Wallymon vocab to come.

Walter sleeping in my chair while I try to work.
This is Walter sleeping on my chair while I try to work. The chair is only built for one person, so how can he sleep so peacefully? Well, I'll tell you how. By jamming his little feet into my back and pushing me forward, inch by inch until I nearly fall off the chair and he at long sweet last can rest comfortably. If I do by chance get up for a cup of coffee or something, when I come back to my chair, Walter has spread out over the entire seat and he looks at me like, "Don't tell me you're sitting back down here again."
While he sleeps, he also likes to take his stuffed dog, as pictured here, and chew on it. He makes this chewy-chewy makka-makka sound. His king-sized dog bed (AKA snack hideaway)with ample throw pillows and soft blankets is two feet away, under the desk, but prefers to sleep up here, head on one armrest, body wedged in an area the size of a loaf of bread. That way he's also handily located by my kidneys, where he can inflict damage even when he's passed out.
Gosh I love this little guy.

Walter has many names, and answers to absolutely none of them.

I realized today I rarely call Walter by name. Instead, I use whatever handy nickname my addled brain can come up with when I'm shouting for him to come in the house or get off my forehead or put down the wine cork. (He loves playing with wine corks. I find them stashed everywhere. Not that there's that much wine in the house...er...you get what I mean.)
Here is a partial list of Walter's more frequently used Nicknames. Keep in mind he answers to absolutely none of them, and I could say "Come here Walter," or "Come here President Lincoln," and get the same response. (Blank staring and assesment of treat options)

Walter gave me a treat!
Getting ready to go to bed is always a big production around here. We have to assemble pillows, refill water bowls and the humidifier (Or Walter gets a dry nose) and then there's all matter of late night snacks to prepare(I usually get walter a Milkbone and leave it on his little doggie bed, which he never sleeps on but now uses as a Milkbone staging area.)Then we climb in to bed and I read as Walter eats his cookie. It's quite a routine.Night before last though, he didn't eat his cookie. He came and dropped it on my arm (sticky from being wedged in little black pug lips) and then walked away. I thought he didn't want it so I just shrugged and put it on the night stand. Then last night Walter and I were wrestling a little bit in bed, playing with a remnant of big pig, and Walter accidentally bit me. I gave a good high-pitched yelp. "Ow," I said, "Ow, ow ow!"
Walter immediately started licking my face until he had me laughing and then he went down to his little dog bed where he stashes his contraband, and rummaged around in the blankets. (must hide the contraband!) He jumped back up on the bed and dropped another little Milkbone on my arm. This time he stayed there and watched me. Staring intently as onbly pugs can. I realized he was giving me the Milkbone as a treat, just the way I give them to him! I just about swooned from the cute factor.
I'll try to get a snapshot of this remarkable act, that is if Walter keeps it up, after all, he's only human. ;)
