Looking for Creative Ideas...

So Walter is really REALLY getting sick of Scamperland and Pug Pen. The thing is, he can walk just fine on carpeted areas, which is one reason we keep him contained, but my place is completely hardwood floors, with some occasional rugs.

This is the first time in my life I wished the whole house was carpeted. Even if he stays in Pug Pen for 90% of the time, it's nice to let him out now and again to join the family in the living room or what have you. After all, his mind is as alert and active as ever. Picture putting your pug in a pen thats the right size for a goat and see how long the fun lasts!! Anyhow, anyone have any cheap ideas for secure-footing flooring? Looks don't matter anymore, we have a pug pen in the dining room. Maybe industrial door mats? Remnant carpet? Anybody own a remnant carpeting place? ;)

And what, what WHAT?? Walter got his first INTERNATIONAL CARE PACKAGE! Hey-O! All the way from Wonderful Mary in Canada. THE COOLEST stuff came, and it came the day we found out Walter's pin was broken, so he didn't even have a minute to feel down, he was chomping on venison treats, getting a backrub with his new groovy back rubbing thingie that he loves, and I was stunned that Mary sent me a dreamy eye pillow! How did she know sleep is my most precious thing these days?!?

Also very cool was pad balm for the pads of Walter's feet. His bad foot especially has been taking a beating despite efforts to protect it. He knuckles it like this:
So thats another major reason to figure out the flooring thing - we can't have him mashing the dorsal side of his paw on wood. Oh, my kingdom for shag carpeting!!

Walmart has rugs for under 20 but they're really low-ply... we got one for the spare room because Harley slips a little on hardwoods. Our other rugs are like $40 and plushier (but not anything fancy) from Lowe's. I know you can also easily get fabric remnants but I don't know where in your area :) Good luck!

Hello Walter and W's Mom: When Sadie started to have trouble with her back legs we got a yoga mat donated and cut it in two - one piece in front of the food bowls and one in her crate - no slipping anymore. So glad you are both doing so well!

Target has carpet 'tiles' for under $100 for a 20x20 space.
I hope this helps. I wish I had an extra rug rolled up in storage to give to you. HUGS!

Carpet tiles are my vote too. FLOR is cool, but can be pricey. I found several suppliers on the web and was really pleased with what I got. Best of all, they are 100% synthetic and can be easily cleaned in care of "accidents". No installation required, and you can find some very hip designs. Lastly, very easy to move around if needed. Good luck Wally - I can see you are getting better control of the drop-paw. It wont be long before you're sprung from Scamperland.
At least you are not constipated ....look for our post later this week :)

Can't they make a boot for Walter so he does not stand on his toes like that?

I agree with the carpet tile suggestions. They are easy to move around and easy to clean.

There is a grippy thing that goe son the bottom of pug's feets...I used one for a while on an older dog's foot that pronated...like the little rubbery grippies on the bottom of kid's socks...let me see if I can find more info on them for you.

I know of the "grippy things" for dogs paws as well. There is a vet near me that sells boots and socks for dogs. I considered getting a pair for winston when he had to have his front paw bandaged and couldn't get it wet. The sock ones come with rubber gripper bottoms, much like some socks that you can get at walmart for people. I can find out what they are called. Walmart is the best place to get cheap area rugs of all sizes so you can scatter them about your floors so Wally can walk on them as opposed to the hard wood floor. Most of them have rubber bottoms so they don't slide on the hardwood. I am pretty sure the USA Walmarts have just as good a selection as the Canadian Walmarts.... if not more selection.

I like the boot idea. Also the carpet tile, and then close the doors of areas where there won't be any carpet on. Good luck on your search!

Find your nearest carpet store and see if they are getting rid of any of the samples. You may have to "buy" them, but since they are discontinued and the can't sell off them, the carpet store will just throw them away.

Whenever we had disco carpet samples I gave them to the daycare or my son's school. They loved me. They had one for every child.

I say bathroom mats...they have that rubber backing that will give him traction and they're pretty cheap....

OOh do you freecycle?? I bet you can get a bunch of rugs on freecycle and its free.

Looks like you've gotten lots of good ideas here, Heather!
My first thought was to call around to some local carpet stores and look into scraps. Sometimes at the end of a roll, they throw away pretty big chunks of carpet. I bet they'd be happy to help!

Hi there! Yes, lots of carpet stores in our areas that would sell remnants cheap or maybe even free if mom and i do some serious begging, tee! Let me know if you want and we would be willing to go to some carpet stores over here and ask... YES you need to get the place carpeted.. I don't like hardwood just for that reason alone! My house is all carpet (with beautiful original hardwood underneath) except the kitchen in which i have lots of rugs.. Let us know, mom will call you or call us! XOXO

hi heather!

i would check out all of the carpeting stores now that the kids are all in their dorms, there might be some great sales on area rugs.

they might also have carpet square smaples that re discontiued that you could place together like a colorful path.

i think they just throw those out when they are not on the sales floor anymore.

would you mind emailing me your dnail mail address. i would really like to help you two.

The carpet tiles are a great idea. Runners too. Between those and the carpet samples, we should have this place covered!

I ditto the vote for a bootie. If Walter is still knuckling after his time in The Pen is up, he'll need portable protection.

One of my dogs had a spinal cord injury and knuckled from the neuro damage. Ruffwear makes good ones:
