The Pins Held!

GREAT NEWS! We took X-rays yesterday and Walter's Pins are right where they should be! They held! The scar tissue is forming, Walter's body has accepted his new bionic legs!

I was hoping to put up images of his before/after X-rays, but the technology is too advanced for me right now...

The only small thing is one bone is still fractured. It is floating in betwixt two bones that have healed (this is in the pelvis region where bones triangulate,) so it is something we may have to operate on in the future, as it may be a catalyst for arthritis. I am thinking I need to research bone/joint regrowth/health etc...

Also, the vet was a bit pessimistic about his foot ever healing. (This is NOT his rehab vet, this is the his primary caregiver vet.)

VET: "His back foot may never heal, you know."

ME: (locking eyes with her like Clint Eastwood) "And it may."

VET: (pauses,) "Yes, it may."

ME: (deadpan) "Well we're going with that one."

VET: (nodding, registering my compulsive-obsessive glare) "All right then. Okay."

So we're going with the foot healing. If anyone has any info on nerve regrowth, send it our way, because we're not giving up. No how, no way.

THANK YOU for this update! YAAAAY!

I just KNEW the pins would hold!

I am 100% behind you on the fact that his foot WILL heal. Walter also 'may not have lived' after the accident- and he did! And he also 'may never walk again'... but he DID! So those negative comments just don't phase me at all!

Our Walter can do anything! I am so happy you guys got good news, Heather.

Good Job Mommy and Walter! The foot will heal just look at how far Walter has come so far in 8 short weeks.

Yeah Walter!! I just knew it would be good news! A day to celebrate indeed!

Don't let that vet get you down about the foot. You've seen improvement, right?? We doctors would rather have patients expect less, then be exstatic when they outdo our predictions! If we gave everyone fantastic prognoses, some would be mad at us when things didn't turn out that way. It's part devil's advocate, part realism, part CYA (cover your ass).

Just be patient. Nerves grow VERY slowly (.25mm/month), so it takes a LONG time to see the results. Keep doing the therapy for now - someday he might plateau, and yes it might not be 100%. But from what you've reported, I just have a feeling that Walter will keep improving!

Now go have some champagne, will ya??? LOL

Yeahs!!! We are so happy to hear that everything is healing and held after this last surgery. We are also behind you that the foot may heal.

When Petunia came to me 2 years ago she could not even do one little stair. Now after supplements, love, and hope...my little girl can do 2 to 3 steps (dpends on size)all by herself! Walter's foot can heal!!

I doing my happy dance! Hooray for Walter!

Just like Pearl said, the negative comments don't phase me at all. You have been told that Walter wouldn't do this and Walter wouldn't do this, and look where you are today.

Walter continues to improve and amaze the medical community. He isn't finshed yet, not at all. Go Walter go!

So (so, so) happy to hear your good news!!! I love the drama of mom's report of the conversation. (Heather, ever thought about screenwriting?) Don't give up on the therapy - nerves can take a full year before healing stops, AND sometimes nearby nerves can take up some slack. I'm hearing the theme to the Six MIllion Dollar Man in my head right now - don't you hear it?

Awesome news! So....does that mean he can bust out of scamperland, or does he still have to limit his walking? I say you have a "take down the wall" party when he is ready. I can't wait til when he can sit on your lap again when you work...I think that will make you both happier!!

Here's what I know about HUMAN nerve growth. My brother fell through a glass aquarium and severed all of the muscles, all of the nerves, all of the veins, well you get the picture. He still has no sensation in parts of his hand, BUT my parents bought a machine that delivers electric impulses that you just attach to the skin, and you can adjust it. The physical therapist swore that the machine helped.

Emily, I wonder if your brother remembers the name of the machine? I would get one for Walter!
