Day Three of Recovery

Walter update:

Day three of him being home and we're working our way into a routine. Urination is the main challenge, either struggling to get him outside, which the doctor recommends, or struggling to get his bed linens changed when he wets his bed.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good urine clean up product? For fabric and then also for walter himself? we are using a product called puppy wipes to wipe his area clean, but I worry because its for puppies its too gentle, we may need something stronger, just so he doesnt get urine burns. Also, after I wash his linens they smell clean, but should I be using an enzyme product to make them smell clean to him?

Our schedule is still pretty rough, I have to get up around 3x a night to clean bedding, administer ice packs etc...which makes me groggy and clumsy, something I strive not to be around my beautiful injured boy.

The good news is tomorrow he goes to the vet for his first check up, and right now any milestone is welcome. He also gets a new pain patch. HOORAY! I am all about pain patches and would like to slap a couple on myself right now. Also Walter seems to sleep for longer stretches and more comfortably. He still has restless periods and yelps every so often - not often once or twice a day only, when something hurts him.

He likes clean towels, classical music and chicken. he has eaten almost 3 whole chicken breasts since he's been home, which is great for his energy. Please keep us in your daily prayers, we still have a long way to go and I pray right now for his pain relief mostly - and of course that he will walk again.

Thank you everybody - I continue to read all blog posts and notes to walter. Knowing there are so many of you rooting for us gives us strength to go on.

Hi Walter and Heather,
I found you through the A Day in the life blog and am so happy to see your boy, handsome indeed, recovering. As a dog mom of three pugs myself I can fully relate to how difficult it must be to see Walter this way. We have sent you lots of good thoughts and prayer. For his bedding you might want to try Natures Miracle w/ enzymes for the urine. You can find it at Petsmart, Petco, etc. We hope that the visit today to the vet brings you good news and some comfort. With kisses, Molly, Brewster, Roscoe, and their Mom

Hi Heather and Walter,

Looks like he is getting a little better every day - we are keeping you in our thoughts!

I second kdam's suggestion for nature's miracle. It works well and they have a laundry product.

It sounds like Walter is doing good. We sure hope you are taking care of yourself as well as Walter.

An enzyme cleaner as well. It will help alot. We are crossing our paws for the vet visist today! Take care.

We use Odo-Ban for our carpets and linens. It works even on cat urine. As for Walter, maybe just mixing a solution of baking soda and warm water would work and just pour it from a plastic ketchup bottle.

Have you tried a vitamin called "The Missing Link?" It does our animals wonders.

I am so glad that Walter seems to be doing better! The yelps are probably because he forgets and moves around?
Sandra's suggestion of some green beans added in sounds like a good idea.

I usually use vinegar for cleaning the rugs... the smell fades really quickly and I usually throw in an extra scoop of oxyclean when I wash the dpg blankets.

What about sensitive skin babywhipes for cleaning Walter? I believe you can get unscented as well.

Hang in there, we are thinking of you and poor Walter!

Thanks for the update, Heather! I am thinking of you guys constantly.

I bought a product at Petsmart last week called 'Petzyme'. I actually went there for Nature's Miracle, but found Petzyme to be much cheaper. It seems to be doing the trick for us!

I am relieved to hear the he'll be getting a check-up and a new pain patch. I know the days must be dragging right now, but in hindsight, these days of recovery will be nothing compared to the many many years Walter will enjoy with you once he is well!

Continued prayers coming your way!

Thanks guys! Sending a friend out for the enzyme cleaner and the baking soda is a brilliant idea. I like the non-chemical element. Thank you for these ideas.

Walter and Heather, we just wanted you to know we've been thinking of you. Moms kitty Bones was sick once and he had to be fed every 6 hours regardless of what time of day it was. Sounds like you are doing wonderful job with him Heather. We will continue to pray for you and Walter!

A cup of borax in with the laundry soap in the wash will remove any odors. A lot more cost effective than Nature's Miracle.

Heather & Walter -
My mom uses Vinegar in the Wash and Rinse and lets the items soak in the soaking cycle prior to starting the wash. This seems to remove the scent. Best of all it is cheap! Looks like Walter is on the mend.
